FROM THE ARTIST

Nyssa Weribone Blades

This design draws inspiration from extensive community consultation focused on Health Equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Darling Downs, South Burnett, Western Downs, and Southern Downs regions. It reflects the collective insights and aspirations of these communities, highlighting the vital importance of health equity and the need for culturally respectful, locally informed approaches to health care.

At its core, this artwork tells the story of the profound connection to culture, land, community, and family that is essential to the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It emphasises that maintaining strong relationships with these foundational elements is key to sustaining health in body, mind, and spirit.

Furthermore, the design acknowledges the critical role of the Darling Downs Health Service in fostering positive health outcomes. It underscores that Health Equity is a shared responsibility and that meaningful, grassroots consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is crucial for creating a culturally safe environment that supports and respects diverse health needs.

Through this visual narrative, we are reminded that true health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can only be achieved through collaboration, understanding, and a commitment to upholding the values of community, culture, and respect.
